Strongest team in IPL, Mumbai Indians, is playing as favourites to win in IPL 4 tournament.  Match time: 4 PM on April 10  Stadium: Feroz Shah Kotla grounds, Delhi.  Ratings for Captains & Teams:   1. Sachin Tendulkar: 8/10 & Mumbai Indians: 9/10  2. Virender Sehwag: 7/10 & Delhi Daredevils: 7/10  Interesting battle:  Lasith Malings Vs Virender Sehwag & David Warner.  Mumbai Indians (MI) analysis:  MI has squad that can send tremors across the spine of opposition. Team management is providing best possible facilities and services to the players. Mumbai played so well in IPL 3 but lost their way in the finals. Sachin is in the form of his life while we know what Pollard and Symonds can do. Lasith Malinga is the best fast bowler in T20 format. Delhi will collapse if Malings takes care off Sehwag and Warner. Suman, Rayudu and Rohit Sharma have good record in Indian Premier League T20.  Best strategy for Mumbai: Ask DD to bat first and chase its score as Delhi is looking weak in the bowling department.  Probable squad: Sachin Tendulkar (Captain), T. Suman, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu (WK), Andrew Symonds, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, James Franklin, Harbhajan Singh, R. Satish & Munaf Patel  Delhi Daredevils (DD) Analysis:  DD has sensational openers - Virender Sehwag and David Warners - who can decimate any bowling department on their day. IPL match preview: Hyderabad Vs Chennai

The reigning champions secured a vital win on Thursday to halt a nightmare run of form. But they are still some way from breaking into the top four. They will take on the Chennai Super Kings in a vital IPL game in Napur on Saturday. Both sides have semi final aspirations but the Super Kings are firm favourites. Venue and Conditions: The wandering Deccan Chargers play their second game at the Vidharba Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. This ground boasts the largest boundaries in the tournament and so offers some respite for hard-pressed spin bowlers. Trivia: Chennai have hit more sixes than any other team in the tournament, 69 in total. Deccan Chargers: The Chargers gave themselves a lifeline with an excellent win over the Royal Challengers in Bangalore on Thursday. They had struggled to close games out, particularly with the bat and their big guns had not turned in the huge scores they are capable of. But Andrew Symonds steered them home against the Royal Challengers and that will have done their confidence a lot of good. A seven wicket win after successfully chasing 185 for victory halted a run of five successive defeats and just about keeps Gilchrist’s men in the tournament. They may well need to win all four of their remaining games which include another game against Royal Challengers, then the Kings XI and finally the Daredevils. The win over Bangalore was the first time the Chargers had successfully chased a total in IPL3 with Symonds and Suman seeing them home with some great hitting. Pragyan Ojha has been the most consistent bowler for Deccan, picking up 15 wickets to lie at the top of the bowlers list in IPL III and although RP Singh has been in and out of the team, he has … [Read more...]

IPL Game preview: Bangalore Vs Kolkata

After a promising start, the Royal Challengers Bangalore are making hard work of IPL 3 and they next face the Knight Riders in Bangalore on Saturday with both sides still in the hunt for a semi final place. One time certainties for a semi-final place, the Royal Challengers have lost four of their last five and are in serious danger of missing out. They will hope to get things back on track against an inconsistent but dangerous Kolkata. Venue and Conditions: The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has been one of the better surfaces for bowlers in this tournament and even though it looks a little drier now, there is still bounce and seam movement on offer for the quicker bowlers, as well as hint of swing. Trivia: Kolkata have beaten Bangalore on each of the three occasions that they have faced one another on Indian soil. Royal Challengers: Both these sides have won Five of their ten games in the tournament so far but the Royal Challengers will be disappointed to have let a commanding position in the points table slip in recent days. RCB have lost four of their last five to slip back into the chasing pack. RCB has a tough run in with games against the Chargers, the Royals and Mumbai Indians to follow this match. It’s strange that the recent disappointing results sequence has coincided with the arrivals of Pietersen, Cameron White and Ross Taylor. Kevin Pietersen has missed two games and may get a recall, at the expense of Cameron White or Ross Taylor. Bangalore have limited room for manoeuvre besides this and there appears no chance of Mark Boucher or Roelof van der Merwe getting a game any time soon. If Steyn is raw pace and bounce, Praveen Kumar looks for variations to do the job. Vinay Kumar … [Read more...]

IPL Game preview: Chennai Vs Mumbai

Tuesday’s game in the IPL looks like a real cracker as the Super Kings take on the Mumbai Indians in Chennai. The Mumbai Indians have lost just one game. While the Super Kings, after an up-and-down are on eight points from nine games. The Mumbai Indians will play to confirm semi-final berth with this win. Chennai Super Kings: The Super Kings are involved in a real scrap for a semi final place but back to back wins have revived their campaign. They have four wins and five defeats so far and key games coming up against Deccan Chargers and the Knight Riders who are also in the hunt. They cannot afford to lose any other games now onward though they do have a healthy net run rate which could well count in their favour. Vijay is fast becoming a star of the tournament and currently tops the Super Kings run scoring charts. With the ball it’s a different story although Doug Bollinger performed really well in his first game of the tournament against the Royals with two wickets for fifteen runs, and all this despite the visitors making an excellent fist of what would have been a record run chase. Mumbai Indians: With seven wins and one defeat, the Mumbai Indians are pretty much assured of a semi final place. They have been ruthless throughout the tournament, their only blemish being a defeat to the Royal Challengers. All departments are functioning as the coaching staff would like and they deserve to be favourites to win the tournament. Tendulkar has scored four half-centuries in eight games with a highest of 72 and a strike-rate of 140.72, besides displaying native shrewdness in team selections and strategies. Tendulkar’s performance not just as a batsman, but also as an inspirational leader who has … [Read more...]

IPL Preview: Kolkata Vs King XI Punjab

Author: Mona Gupta (New Delhi) Back to winning ways courtesy an inspiring innings from Ganguly in their last match against title-holders Deccan Chargers, Kolkata Knight Riders suddenly find themselves in reckoning for a last-four berth as their 24-run victory improved their position to fifth on the table. Kolkata Knight Riders will be high on confidence when they take on a battered and bruised Kings XI Punjab in their return match of the Indian Premier League match in Kolkata on Sunday. Venue and Conditions: The troubled Kings XI Punjab will visit the cricketing Mecca of Eden Gardens to take on Sourav Ganguly's Kolkata Knight Riders in match 34 of the IPL. Punjab are in disarray after losing a game they should have won to Bangalore last time out and they are now four points adrift at the bottom of the table. Kolkata are in fifth and need to win to maintain their challenge for the semis. The pitches at Eden Gardens tend to get slower as the game progresses so batting first tends to be the preferred choice for the captain that wins the toss. Any score over 160 here is a potentially defendable total. The Kolkata: Kolkata will have been delighted with their last performance against Deccan and may field virtually the same team. There will be pressure on Angelo Mathews and more importantly Chris Gayle to start delivering with the bat, but they have compensated somewhat by producing handy performances with the ball, so should be safe. Kolkata tend to run hot then cold, a good performance followed by a bad one. This lack of consistency needs to be addressed especially in their batting where they need more than one player to contribute a decent score each innings. So Chris Gayle needs to step up to the plate … [Read more...]

IPL Match Preview: Kolkata Vs Delhi

The IPL points table is bunching up and Monday's match features two middle-ranking teams who recently arrested their respective slumps with vital wins. The Delhi Daredevils entertain Sourav Ganguly's Kolkata Knight Riders at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Monday night. A victory for either side will put their IPL campaigns right on track where as a defeat may start another of those dreaded losing streaks, which both teams will be desperate to avoid. Venue and Conditions: The Feroz Shah Kotla achieved notoriety last December when a one-day game between India and Sri Lanka was called off after twenty-three overs due to an unsafe pitch. But fast bowlers who were anticipating having some fun in Delhi have been disappointed in the tournament so far. In the first game, Mumbai piled up 218 and in the second, Chennai easily overhauled the home side's total of 185. The pitch is flat and true and offers very little for bowlers of any description. Team Performance: Delhi will be desperately hoping that their two injured players will be fit for this game. Without Asish Nehra, the bowling looks threadbare and Captain Gautam Gambhir's steadying influence at the top of the order is sorely missed. Their other decision is whether to recall Tillakaratne Dilshan, who was dropped for the last two games. Kolkata have options but may decide to stick with a winning team. David Hussey has gone straight into the team at the expense of Owais Shah and is sure to be given a decent run. Charl Langeveldt and Ajantha Mendis don't look like getting a game any time soon but they consider drafting in spinner Murali Karthik. These teams secured vital wins last time out, but of the two victories, Delhi's was the more impressive, … [Read more...]

IPL game Preview: Rajasthan Vs Chennai

T20 Match Preview: Rajasthan Royals Vs Chennai Super King Venue and Conditions: First game of the double header on Sunday is a repeat of the 2008 season's final showdown - the Rajasthan Royals versus the Chennai Super Kings. The game will be played at Rajasthan's second home at Motera in Ahmedabad, and both teams come in with contrasting fortunes in the week past. The Sadam Partel stadium surface in Ahmedabad does not look to be full of runs. Sides have struggled to post big scores first up this year with totals of 148, 168 and 141. Team Performance: Rajasthan have chalked up a hat-trick of victories while Chennai have suffered a hat-trick of defeats. After three demoralizing losses on the trot, the Royals have scripted a fairytale turnaround to win three straight games. After languishing at the bottom of the pile initially, they are now up to third in the points table in the blink of an eye, and this just goes on to prove just how quickly things can turn around in this format. Despite the loss of key men like Graeme Smith and Dimitri Mascarenhas, Rajasthan have been galvanised. Hampshire's Michael Lumb and Yusuf Pathan have been to the fore. The spunky young Faiz Fazal was drafted in and started contributing right away. Yusuf Pathan played his second massive innings of the season after his hundred in Mumbai, carting 8 sixes against Deccan to win the match on his own. In the preceding couple of games, Adam Voges provided great finishes with his hard-hitting prowess, and ensured Rajasthan accounted for the last 5 overs well. With the batsmen firing, the bowlers got back their confidence, led by a resurgent and disciplined Tait as he bowled two fabulous spells against Punjab and Deccan to … [Read more...]

IPL Match Preview: Hyderabad Vs Mumbai Indians

Venue and Conditions: Deccan take on Mumbai at home but it will feel like an away game. It is important to note that this match is being played at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai, not the Brabourne stadium. Only one game has been played there so far; Kolkata beating Deccan by 11 runs having posted 161. Team Performance: Deccans are well equipped to inflict a second defeat on Mumbai. Thanks to their disciplined bowling they are one of the few sides who can be confident of restricting a start-studded batting line-up. Just like Bangalore frustrated the Indians in their only defeat so far, Adam Gilchrist's men could do a similar job. They have managed it three times before in IPL. Chaminda Vaas is the key man for Deccan. With an economy rate of 6.66 - one of the best of the tournament - he and opening partner RP Singh must keep Sachin Tendulkar quiet. The Indians this year are a well-oiled unit who has been led from the front by Tendulkar, himself in stupendous form. In the previous two games Tendulkar has carried his bat through and that is indication enough of what the Chargers' bowlers should expect. Mumbai's Sanath Jayasuriya missed out in the victory over Chennai as Ryan McLaren's medium pacers were preferred. He only went for five an over so should keep his place. Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo continue in the middle order meaning JP Duminy will have to warm the bench. Mumbai's bowlers have been on target right through with Zaheer Khan, Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh all among the wickets. The Chargers' running between the wickets has also been dicey and the calling for runs must improve. The Chargers who had won three of their five games produced an ugly performance against … [Read more...]

Match Preview: Punjab Vs Kolkata

Match Preview: King XI Punjab v Kolkata Knight Rider Venue and Conditions: On Saturday, two bollywood stars Preety Zinta and Shahrukh Khan will face each other on cricket ground. Preety's Kings XI Punjab will play Shahrukh's Kolkata Knight Kolkata Knight Riders at the Mohali ground in Chandigarh. Both the sides are struggling to get into the top four in the points table, with Punjab having won only one game out of the five matches they have played while Kolkata won two. Team performance: Kolkata had had a good start to the tournament with two upset victories against defending champions Deccan Chargers and last edition runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore. KKR’s sudden batting woes at the top means that they have lost three successive games. However, it has been worse for the Kings XI Punjab, who lost three matches to start their campaign before scraping through one and that too via a one-over eliminator against Chennai Super Kings and then going down in another one. For Kings, nothing seemed to be going right and they are now at the bottom of the points table. Kolkata had a reasonable start in their previous game against Mumbai, but the surprising bit was that despite the presence of Sourav Ganguly and Chris Gayle as openers, the run-rate was pretty low. Ganguly looks like a pale shadow of himself and it would make sense for him to promote a right-handed batsman up the order instead of himself. He may also consider the Brad Hodge and Owais Shah swap, with Hodge having had shown signs of good form. In the bowling department, left-arm spinner Murali Kartik has been the most consistent while New Zealand pacer Shane Bond has also done a decent job so far. Pacer Ishant Sharma though has been expensive. … [Read more...]
