In the first round of IPL, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils played two matches each while other teams played one match each. Sourav Ganguly (Pune Warriors) emerged as the best captain in the first round. No team emerged as the hot favourite in this round. Pune surprised everyone by defeating Mumbai in Mumbai. KKR once again deceived fans with poor performance while Rajasthan impressed everyone with limited resources. Best innings of the first round: Ajinkya Rahane (Rajasthan Royals). He performed well even in England but Indian team management failed to give him enough chances in International cricket. Most valuable player of 1st round: Kevon Cooper (Rajasthan Royals). IPL T20 cricket team of 1st round: Captain of the team: AB De Villiers (Royal Challengers). My team has just 4 Indians. If rules do not allow to play with 7 foreign stars, I replace Muralidharan and Smith with Ashwin/Ojha & Irfan Pathan respectively. Batting: 1. Ajinkya Rahane (Rajasthan Royals): He might have missed the century but produced a classic innings. His well constructed innings (98 runs in 66 balls) is one of the best in IPL history. 2. Richard Levi (Mumbai Indians): Sensational innings on IPL debut against CSK but Murali Karthik brutally exposed him on a turning Wankhede pitch. He is too dangerous on his day. 3. Steven Smith (Pune Warriors): Good batting under difficult conditions against quality attack. He can bowl also. 4. AB de Villiers (Royal Challengers): What an innings against Delhi Daredevils! He is arguably the best batsmen in international … [Read more...]
7 Suggestions for IPL management
Indian Premier League (IPL) changed the lives of even unknown cricketers while it turned some cricketers like Paul Valthaty into overnight stars. It has the potential to become the biggest sporting brand in the world in 5-6 years if ICC cooperates with BCCI. These are my suggestions to increase IPL brand value, TV viewership 7 Suggestions for IPL management: 1. Include every player who played at least 1 IPL match in the auction. When ordinary players like Joginder Sharma are in the auction, why not Ambati Rayudu & Paul Valthaty? 2. Increase the number of match avenues to 20. Allot 2-3 games to stadiums in cities likeVisakhapatnam, Cuttack, Guwahati, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Gwalior, Baroda etc. Allot 2 stadiums to each franchisee. Ex. Chennai Super Kings management should develop another stadium in Tamil Nadu (Madurai / Coimbatore). Deccan Chargers owners should develop another stadium in Vijayawada/Vizag. Increase in the number of venues will help ticket sales and enhance IPL brand value. Chennai Super Kings should represent Tamil Nadu (not chennai) to get high brand value and fan base. 3. Format: Current format is the best one. No changes are required. 4. Schedule: Conduct every IPL tournament from April 1 – May 31. It is easy for other countries to plan their schedule. 5. Conduct two matches only on weekends and holidays. One match is enough on weekdays. Conducting two matches on weekends and holidays will help to increase TV ratings and also reduce viewer & player fatigue. To facilitate that, BCCI should increase the number of match days to 60 (April 1 to May 30). How many people … [Read more...]

Sehwag’s injury: A clarion call
Starting March 12, 2010, the IPL became the focus of the cricket-loving public. On March 26th, the BCCI declared the list of players for the T20 World Cup due to start in the Caribbean on April 30th. As usual, there was furore over some omissions and inclusions. It died down and the spotlight shifted back to the IPL. Then, rumours of scandals hit the IPL. In the midst of this hullabaloo, cricket lovers were all set to enjoy the semi-finals, when the bombshell dropped. The BCCI declared that Virender Sehwag was ruled out of the T20 World Cup as he was suffering from a shoulder injury which would take 3 to 4 weeks to heal. Every avid Indian cricket fan would surely have been stunned. It was almost déjà vu. Remember, the Sultan of Multan didn't play in the last World Cup either, but the script then was slightly different. He had gone to England and come back without playing a single match thanks to a shoulder injury which was declared late. He subsequently underwent surgery. Captain Dhoni made a statement on how players should not hide injuries, obviously hinting at Sehwag. There was also a rift between the team management and the media on the issue of Sehwag's injury. India lost all the Super 8 matches in the tournament. Coming back to this year's injury, nobody has any details as to how and when he sustained the injury and what is its nature? He had been declared fit when the squad had been announced. So it must have been caused in the course of the IPL matches. Sehwag played a total of 14 matches for the Delhi Daredevils and scored a total of 356 runs with an average of 25.42 and a strike rate of 163.3. But he has not looked comfortable in his game. He either sustained this injury in the last game where Delhi Daredevils played against the … [Read more...]
IPL Game preview: Bangalore Vs Kolkata
After a promising start, the Royal Challengers Bangalore are making hard work of IPL 3 and they next face the Knight Riders in Bangalore on Saturday with both sides still in the hunt for a semi final place. One time certainties for a semi-final place, the Royal Challengers have lost four of their last five and are in serious danger of missing out. They will hope to get things back on track against an inconsistent but dangerous Kolkata. Venue and Conditions: The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has been one of the better surfaces for bowlers in this tournament and even though it looks a little drier now, there is still bounce and seam movement on offer for the quicker bowlers, as well as hint of swing. Trivia: Kolkata have beaten Bangalore on each of the three occasions that they have faced one another on Indian soil. Royal Challengers: Both these sides have won Five of their ten games in the tournament so far but the Royal Challengers will be disappointed to have let a commanding position in the points table slip in recent days. RCB have lost four of their last five to slip back into the chasing pack. RCB has a tough run in with games against the Chargers, the Royals and Mumbai Indians to follow this match. It’s strange that the recent disappointing results sequence has coincided with the arrivals of Pietersen, Cameron White and Ross Taylor. Kevin Pietersen has missed two games and may get a recall, at the expense of Cameron White or Ross Taylor. Bangalore have limited room for manoeuvre besides this and there appears no chance of Mark Boucher or Roelof van der Merwe getting a game any time soon. If Steyn is raw pace and bounce, Praveen Kumar looks for variations to do the job. Vinay Kumar … [Read more...]
IPL T20 Preview: Delhi Vs Bangalore
The story of the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi Daredevils makes identical with a decent first half of the season means that a semi-final spot is there for the taking for both Bangalore and Delhi and a win for either side on Sunday night only edges that team a little bit closer. On a roll with three successive victories, Delhi Daredevils will look to continue the winning momentum. Delhi had bounced back in the tournament with a 17-run win over Bangalore on March 25 and then won two more matches to bring their campaign back on track. They currently lie third on the points table. The Devil Hosts: It was a convincing win over the Rajasthan Royals the other night, a victory that saw two of the batsmen and two of the bowlers contribute towards. One must doff one’s hat to the manner in which Dinesh Karthik batted after the first couple of wickets had fallen, and virtually took the game away from Rajasthan. The Delhi team has gone through a complete metamorphosis since those three consecutive defeats with the very much in-form unit of David Warner, Paul Collingwood, Farveez Maharoof, Andrew McDonald and Kedhar Jadhav now playing starring roles. A batting order led by Sehwag, but with no mention of the dasher is impossible, but the Delhi stalwart could use some runs and what better time to score them than in a big game. Karthik’s innings was the difference between the two sides, and it consisted of some crisp and clean hitting. He has been doing a good job behind the wickets and this innings in front of the stumps would have only added to his confidence. In Virender Sehwag, Delhi have someone who can rip apart any bowling attack on his given day and Kedar Jadhav has also shown some spark. Among the … [Read more...]
